Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to common queries about your rental experience

Booking

The booking process with 4Drive Germany is designed to be straightforward. You select your vehicle, dates, and pickup location through our online platform. Once submitted, you receive a confirmation voucher with all essential details for your rental.

How do I confirm my booking?

After completing the online booking form and paying the advance, you receive a voucher by email within minutes. This voucher contains your reservation reference, vehicle details, pickup location, and the contact details of the local rental company handling your reservation. Print or save the voucher to your mobile device.

Can I modify my reservation after booking?

Yes, you can request changes to dates, pickup location, or vehicle type by contacting us at [email protected]. Availability and any price adjustments depend on the new parameters you select. We process modification requests during office hours, Monday to Sunday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM GMT+1.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

If your arrival time changes, inform us as soon as possible. The local rental company will hold your vehicle for a reasonable period. For significant delays, contact the company directly using the details on your voucher. Most pickup desks at major airports accommodate late arrivals, but advance notice prevents complications.

Payment and Advance

When you book through 4Drive Germany, you pay a booking advance online by card. The remaining balance is settled when you collect the vehicle. Payment methods for the balance vary depending on the specific vehicle you have reserved.

What payment methods do you accept online?

The booking advance is paid online by debit or credit card. We do not accept cash payments online. The advance secures your reservation and is part of the total rental amount. Details about accepted cards are shown during the checkout process on our website.

How do I pay the remaining balance?

The balance is paid at pickup. The accepted payment method for the balance depends on the specific vehicle you booked and is clearly indicated during the booking process and on your voucher. Some vehicles accept debit cards and cash, others require a credit card. Check your voucher carefully before you travel. More information is available on our payment methods page.

Is the price I see the final amount?

The price displayed during booking includes the vehicle rental for the selected period and standard insurance cover. Additional services such as a second driver, child seat, or written permission for cross-border travel to neighbouring countries are optional and carry extra charges. These are listed separately during booking.

Deposit and Credit Card

A deposit is a temporary hold placed on a card by the rental company at pickup. It serves as security against damage or traffic fines. The deposit amount and the type of card required vary by vehicle, not by vehicle class.

Do all vehicles require a deposit?

No. Some vehicles in our selection are available with no deposit requirement. This means the rental company does not place a hold on your card at pickup. The excess (the amount you remain liable for in case of damage) still applies and is specified in the rental agreement. No deposit and excess are independent parameters.

What if I do not have a credit card?

Many vehicles accept debit cards for both payment and deposit purposes. If a vehicle requires a credit card for the deposit, consider increasing the limit on your debit card or choosing a vehicle that accepts debit cards. Requirements are specific to each vehicle and are stated clearly during booking and on your voucher.

When is the deposit released?

The rental company releases the deposit hold after you return the vehicle undamaged and settle any outstanding charges such as fuel or tolls. Release timing depends on your card issuer, typically between a few days and two weeks. Contact your bank if the hold persists beyond that period.

Documents and Age

Valid documentation is essential for collecting your vehicle. The rental company verifies your identity and driving eligibility at the pickup desk. Prepare these documents in advance to avoid delays.

What documents do I need to bring?

You must present your voucher, a valid driving licence held for the minimum period specified in your rental terms, and a payment card in the main driver's name. If your licence is issued outside the EU, an International Driving Permit is recommended. Some rental companies also require identification such as a passport or national ID card.

What is the minimum age to rent?

Minimum age and licence holding period vary by vehicle. Compact cars typically require the driver to be at least 21 years old with one year of licence history. Larger vehicles, SUVs, and premium models often require the driver to be 23 or 25 years old with two or more years of licence experience. These requirements are confirmed during booking.

Can I add a second driver?

Yes. Additional drivers can be added at pickup for an extra charge. The second driver must meet the same age and licence requirements as the main driver and present their driving licence and identification at the rental desk.

Pickup and Return

Your voucher specifies where and when to collect the vehicle. Pickup arrangements depend on the rental company handling your reservation. Most pickups occur at airport desks or city-centre offices, though delivery to hotels is sometimes available.

Where do I collect the vehicle?

The pickup location is stated on your voucher. At airports such as BER Berlin Brandenburg, rental desks are typically located in the arrivals hall or in a dedicated rental centre nearby. In cities, pickup points may be at a counter near the main railway station or at a local office. Some companies offer delivery to your hotel. Follow the directions on your voucher.

What should I check before driving away?

Inspect the vehicle thoroughly with the rental company representative. Note any existing damage, scratches, or dents in the rental agreement. Check fuel level, tyre condition, and ensure all lights and indicators function correctly. Confirm the return location, date, and time. Ask about fuel policy and any local driving regulations.

What if I return the vehicle late?

Returning the vehicle after the agreed time may result in additional charges. If you anticipate a delay, contact the rental company as soon as possible using the details on your voucher. They may be able to accommodate a short extension. Significant delays without notice can incur penalties or be charged as an extra rental day.

Driving in Germany

Germany has well-maintained road infrastructure and clear traffic regulations. Familiarising yourself with local rules before you drive reduces confusion and helps you avoid fines.

Are there speed limits on German motorways?

Many autobahn sections have an advisory speed of 130 km/h, with numerous stretches unrestricted. However, variable speed limits apply in built-up areas, construction zones, and sections with heavy traffic. Urban areas have a 50 km/h limit, and rural roads are generally limited to 100 km/h. Always observe posted signs and adapt speed to road and weather conditions.

Do I need any special stickers for city driving?

Certain cities including Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg have environmental zones called Umweltzonen. Vehicles entering these zones require a green emissions sticker. Most rental vehicles already have this sticker affixed to the windscreen. Verify with the rental company representative at pickup. Driving without the sticker in restricted zones can result in fines.

Can I drive to neighbouring countries?

Cross-border travel to most EU neighbours is permitted with prior written permission from the rental company. Request this service during booking, as it involves an additional charge. The written permission document must be carried in the vehicle. Some rental companies restrict travel to certain countries, so confirm coverage for your intended destinations.

Changes and Cancellation

Plans change, and we understand that flexibility matters. Cancellation and modification policies are outlined in your rental terms. Review these terms carefully when you book.

Can I cancel my booking?

Cancellation policies depend on the vehicle and rate you selected. Some bookings allow free cancellation up to a specified time before pickup, while others are non-refundable. Check the terms displayed during booking and on your voucher. To cancel, contact us at [email protected] with your reservation reference.
